'Sparks Fly' at Gillette Stadium, as Taylor Swift defies the rain

FOXBORO — About halfway through Taylor Swift’s show at Gillette Stadium Saturday night, the clouds finally opened up, but that didn’t stop the 21-year-old singer and songwriter from eventually dubbing the evening “one of the coolest nights of my entire life.” Certainly, she didn’t let the drenching she eventually got slow her down.

Swift, who last year became the first female act to headline Gillette, based her set list around last fall’s “Speak Now” album with a few chestnuts thrown in. Lyrically and musically, she’s unabashedly teenaged (or formerly teenaged), as are most of her fans, and the visuals of the show reflected that as well, right from the get-go — Swift appeared out of columns of fairy lights and fireworks for the fresh-scrubbed, gently rocking “Sparks Fly.”

And while that song is a fairly generic re-creation of ’80s arena rock, the following “Mine” was where Swift began to reassert her main songwriting talent. She’s notorious for specifically directed songs about people (particularly ex-boyfriends) who cheese her off, but that very specificity and detail powers the best country music, and she’s mostly kept it with her as she’s taken her sound far from Nashville.

While “The Story of Us” was another unspectacular rock workout, she hit her gear when she popped out of the stage like a jack-in the-box (triggered by a tap-dancing janitor in another bit of theatrics) to play a banjo introduction for the bouncy “Our Song,” complete with fiddle, and followed it up with the sprightly country hop of “Mean” (complete with joyous clap-along) — two songs that showed off the trademark Swift bite. She was at the piano for “Back to December,” for which she turned the stage into a giant snow globe, and then tore through the angry “Better Than Revenge.”

“Speak Now” was given a narrative theatrical treatment, with a playlet about a girly break-up-the-vows fantasy that saw Swift finish up by running from the “church” deep into the Gillette crowd for some hand-shaking, ending up on a small stage under a fake tree.

Most of the oldies like me in this forum have seen this movie few times. Even youngsters like my daughter loved this movie. If by any chance (which is remote) if someone has not seen this movie, it is a nice comedy to watch. Great songs too. We have seen Hero in double roles in most movies... in this movie, leave alone the hero, even the villan comes in double role to add to the choas!
