The Roots Picnic Recap

Alabama’s own, Yelawolf proved himself to be a true talent with impressive stage presence, flow, and beats whose bass that kept the show amped up. He ran through his most popular songs including “Pop the Trunk,” “Daddy’s Lambo,” “Wanna Party,” “Trunk Muzik,” “Let’s Go,” and more. He also did what no one expected – dumped a bottle of water on himself and stage-dove into the audience. Everyone went wild.

At nightfall, Wiz Khalifa hit the stage. There was not a dull moment during his performance, especially not when he showed Philadelphia some love and brought out the Young Gunz, who performed “Better Luv,” as well as Beanie Sigel and Freeway for a performance of “Do It Again” and “Roc the Mic.” To say the least, the crowd went wild.

Last but not least were the headliners, The Roots. After playing a number of crowd pleasers like “Star,” “Here I Come,” and “How I Got Over,” as well as bringing Peedi Peedi on stage, their featured guest hit the stage, Nas. He ran through some of his hits as well, such as: “One Mic,” “It Ain’t Hard to Tell,” “If I Ruled the World,” and “Made You Look,” as well a number of other songs. He wrapped up his appearance with “Hip Hop Is Dead” which judging by the crowd and energy, it surely is not.

Lil Wayne may consider himself the world's greatest rapper but live he can be a surreal experience – and not in a good way. Maybe hip-hop works best on street corners, in school corridors or in clubs where stripped-down, sweaty rappers battle it out.
