Saint Paul's College remains accredited

LAWRENCEVILLE - Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), Saint Paul's College notified Dr. Robert L. Satcher, Sr., president, that the College remains accredited, but because of limited financial resources the College will remain on probation for a period up to 12 months. The primary concern of SACSCOC relates to the adequacy of the College's financial resources to support the College's mission and the scope of its programs and services. Recently the Saint Paul's College Board of Trustees voted to discontinue the entire athletic program at the college to address long standing financial issues effective July 1.

Last year Saint Paul's College received conditional re-accreditation from SACS for another year and was placed on one year probation to give the college a chance to correct deficiencies found during the re-accreditation process.

"We wish to express our deep sense of gratitude to the entire Saint Paul's College family, community constituents and friends of the College, for their steadfast support in these important and challenging times in the school's history," Satcher said. "To address the issues surrounding financial resources, the College has begun implementing a financial stability plan that has been presented to SACSCOC. We respectfully solicit the continuing support of all constituents and friends of the College. In preparing for the upcoming fall semester, we are ever mindful that our students are our number one priority. With this in mind, we are working to enhance and maintain a quality educational experience for them." Brenda R. Herrington, PMP, President, Brunswick County Alumni Chapter, Saint Paul's College National Alumni Association, Inc. said, "I was delighted to learn that the College remained accredited and that SACS did not reject the College's proposed Financial Stability Plan. This gives the alumni and supporters of the College an opportunity to help raise funds necessary to demonstrate to SACS that the College is financially stable moving forward. I encourage everyone to make a donation to the College."

Lawrence Penn, an alumnus, was pleased with the ruling but emphasized more work needs to be done to help Saint Paul's College. "Probation with continued accreditation was what we expected and affords us the opportunity to continue our efforts to restore Saint Paul's College to its former glory and beyond.

Saint Paul's College situation proves leaders need to get their ...

I am vastly disappointed in the United States Justice Department.

While the department’s antitrust chief, Christine Varney, was on Capitol Hill investigating why the NCAA doesn’t have a playoff at the Football Bowl Subdivision level, Saint Paul’s College plans to kill its intercollegiate athletics program .

The small college, member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, will shut down major athletics operations by July 1 in an attempt to alleviate some of the school’s financial instability it has faced.

Saint Paul’s president Robert L. Satcher and his staff say they will explore studying implementation of a full-scale program of intramural athletics, and reinstating the athletic program once their books are balanced.

The institution has worked vigorously to cut a reported $4 million from the school’s $11 budget.

The Saint Paul situation is just another case in the long line of setbacks that have hit colleges and universities as the nation slowly recovers from a crippling recession.

I, like many college football fans, would love to see a playoff instead of the elitist, pay day loan scheme that is the Bowl Championship Series. However, the NCAA and its member institutions are facing more pressing issues.

Someone needs to get their priorities in order.

One of them is schools forced to drop certain teams or entire athletic programs to save money.

A postseason for college football does not fix disproportionate funding, layoffs or an increase in recruiting budget for HBCU athletic teams.

Sure, President Barack Obama proposed $98 million in new paper for HBCUs for the fiscal 2011 budget, but that cash isn’t enough to plug the shortfall holes schools scramble to close.

According to a report in the Daily Tarheel , a recent 17.4 percent budget cut for the UNC school system proposed by state officials could significantly and disproportionately impact HBCUs.

Florida A&M is expected to slash 200 jobs by the end of next month due to budget issues.

How can we not forget the dire situation of Southern’s women’s basketball team nearly being unable to make a trip to the WNIT because the coffers were running on empty. That is concurrent with the University of Greater New Orleans merger.

The Justice Department should be investigating these issues. The folks in Washington should be asking why under the NCAA’s current basketball revenue distribution plan, BCS powers always get the biggest pieces of pie while the rest get the crumbs?
