Maui or Playa Del Carmen- we are on a budget, and this will be our ...

My family and I are going to take our first troical vacation next year, and I am considering Playa del carmen in mexico, or Maui in hawaii. Our kids will be five and nine, and we are on a budget. We want to relax, but have fn things to do as well. I have heard that both are great, but I am worried about the saftey in Mexico, and the price of hawaii. Thanks!

In my opinion, staying with the US at this time makes a lot of sense. It’s hard enough to avoid the Flu in the US let alone another country.

Hawaii has reached an ALL TIME low in prices. Maui has some fabulous prices at the Luxury resorts (Want to stay at a 5 star for a 3 star price). Or there are many different affordable condos where you could have a full kitchen.

Take advantage of the discounted to Hawaii, when the recession ends the prices will go up right back up!

If you travel during off days, and you are flexible you can find great deals to Maui.

I went to Playa in February and Maui in March this year. I don’t know where you live, but I would go with Playa del Carmen for sure! It takes a whole day to travel to Maui and another full day coming back! Plus, you have all the jet lag issues. For me, living in the central timezone, I can leave on 6:00 AM flight and be on the beach in Playa by 12 or 1:00 the same day.

Pay no attention to those who warn of drugs and the flu. That’s just ignorance talking. I travel to PDC every year at least once, often 2 or 3 times, and have for 13 years. There is no worse drug problem in Playa than there is here in the US. And for pete’s sake, H1N1 is a world wide problem. Anyone who thinks it’s a mexico problem is just not paying attention!

The caribbean cannot be beat! The water is much warmer and not nearly as rough as the Pacific. There is so much to do from the ruins of Chitzen itza and Tulum, to snorkeling off the palancar reef or in a cenote (a really unique experience). There are eco parks with zoos, and underground rivers, and dolphins, a butterfly sanctuary; the kids will love it!

A really good option on a budget is to rent a condo, for either locale. It’s much easier with a family; a lot like having your own home.
