National Cherry Festival

Washington, D.C.’s cherry blossoms may be more famous, but beginning today for a week in Traverse City, Michigan, a half-million people will flock to the shores of Lake Michigan for a different kind of celebration — the National Cherry Festival, first held in 1926. They’ll be treated to air shows, parades, concerts and sporting events — but the star of the show will be delicious goodies made out of cherries, ranging from pies to ice cream to jam. There are two main types of cherries — sweet for eating right off the tree and tart for baking. Michigan is the leading producer of tart cherries. In the U.S.,160,000 tons of these cherries are harvested each year.
