Acronyms Everywhere
I believe it is safe to assume that most of the people in this community know their gaming acronyms very well. Acronyms are a big part of gaming culture, from AYBABTU to FPS to MMORPG to ZOMGWTFBBQ , gamers just love their acronyms.
One specific acronym has been on my mind for the longest time now, and it in fact has been brewing in there for years before I even knew it existed: the acronym MOBA.
I am sure a lot of you know what a MOBA is. But for those of you not in the know, MOBA is short form for Multiplayer Online Battle Arena . It is a different flavor of gaming that takes elements from traditional RTS , RPG and even Fighting games, and mashes them all together. It is by nature a team game, and typically pits two teams against each other in a race to destroy the opposing base.
MOBA Basics: what the uninitiated might want to know, and why it kicks so much ass.
At the beginning of the game, each hero gets to select a unit, and uses the unit's unique skills and abilities to help his team win the game. Adding immense depth to each game are the myriad items and the plethora of effects that they bring to the table. There are items that increase your damage output exponentially, as well as items that make you an extreme PITA to kill.
Discovering the right way to use a unit as well as knowing which items to equip it with makes MOBAS highly skill and knowledge based. You don't get "strong" through the endless repetition of the same old actions. You get good by learning the game itself. This is what drew me to the genre in the first place. I grew tired of PvPing against people who have way more time than me to get geared out the ass and getting completely and utterly PWNT no matter how bad they were skill wise.
It is an immense source of gratification when I do great at a MOBA game, and a nice way to relieve some of the MMORPG frustration that pre-AoB (2.0) Aion netted me. MOBAS do have a rather large learning curve, but once you get over it, it adds to the satisfaction of playing well.
A Little History
Many people believe that the MOBA genre got its start from the Warcraft 3 Custom Map, DoTA: Allstars. In a sense this is true, as the current generation of games undeniably took great inspiration from the game. DoTA: Allstars is the catalyst that made MOBA gaming what it is today. But it isn't the first MOBA game. That title is reserved for the Starcraft (1) custom map, Aeon of Strife. It has significant gameplay differences from the MOBA as we know it today, but you can clearly see the roots for the genre in AoS.
