"... even during the recession, the last place to feel the pain was kids extras as parents tried to insulate their kids from the recession," said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst for NPD. "But the length of the recession and the ability to trade down on some fashion products made it possible and even necessary for parents to cut back even on their kids clothing."
It added that "while lease extensions were available, the proposed lease terms would make the United States retail operation unsustainable especially given the poor state of the retail environment in that market. As a result, the company is implementing a managed store closure program that will see the 20 stores cease trading on a staggered basis over the coming six months utilizing short-term lease roll-overs where required."
Pumpkin Patch isn't the only children's clothing company that's struggling. Hot Topic, a retailer catering to kids as young as 12, this year closed its stores at The Village at Orange, The District at Tustin Legacy and Laguna Hills Mall. It still has locations at Irvine Spectrum Center, Brea Mall, Westfield MainPlace in Santa Ana, Westminster Mall and The Block at Orange.
In November, City of Industry-based Hot Topic announced a cost-reduction plan to meet the challenges of the current environment. Among key strategies was the closure of about 40 to 50 underperforming store locations by the end of the fiscal first quarter, which ran through April. These closures occurred as a result of natural lease expirations, exercising lease kick-out clauses and other negotiations.
Citing a weak retail environment, at least two clothing chains catering to kids have closed Orange County stores this year.
Nationally, kids clothing sales have also been hurt too.
U.S. clothing sales for newborns to kids age 12 fell 3.1 percent to $32.2 billion from May 2010 to April 2011, according to The NPD Group Inc., a consumer tracking service.
