Maurer handcrafts success

Maurer does all his own metal fabricating right in his own shop, making custom body panels, floors, sides, frames — whatever the project calls for. He has 17 paint and body certifications and is working with PGB, the biggest automotive paint manufacturer, to put in two paint mixing banks in his shop that will help him custom blend his own colors. He has already added onto his building several times to accommodate the growing concern. His latest addition is 40-by-80. “When I was considering the Good Guys show I realized they were looking for custom work. I had a blue Camaro and I thought about what I could do to compete. I came up with the idea to customize the dash. It was a 3-D dash using Harley-Davidson headlights. It caught a lot of attention. It was the first time I debuted a car and it was up for the “Riddler” award, which is really prestigious. Against the other top 34 or 35 cars ours was the only one under a million dollars. It was a big honor for this company, the organizers loved the custom aspect of it. And it made people look differently at custom hot rods,” From there, Maurer was contacted to work on a 1967 Firebird. He and his fellow employees put 4,500 hours into this vehicle and gave it a custom two-tone paint scheme. This car not only caught Foose’s attention, it  started winning at these major shows and the business flourished. “I love the fact that we come up against teams of 20 fabricators and I love the reaction we get when they realize we’re a team of three.

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio, June 28, 2011 – A gleaming black 1934 Ford painted with products from PPG Industries’ (NYSE: PPG) automotive refinish business was named America’s Most Beautiful Roadster at the 62nd Grand National Roadster Show held recently in Pomona, Calif. The award is a highly coveted honor, regarded as one of the most prestigious in the world of custom cars.

 

The sleek roadster, owned by Daryl Wolfswinkel, was built by Doug Jerger and his crew at Squeeg’s Kustoms in Chandler, Ariz. Jerger’s team spent about 18 months designing, building and painting the car. They chose DELTRON(R) brand single-stage DCC CONCEPT(R) acrylic urethane coating to give it a lustrous black finish.

“Those guys at PPG have it all together,” Jerger said. “Their paint always shoots and sprays right and looks great. We use only PPG products; been using them since the shop opened in 1964 and started with Ditzler. The others just don’t have it down the way PPG does.”

Aside from the smooth, mirror-like finish, the traditionally styled roadster features an aluminum block 427 Ford engine jacked up to churn out more than 700 horsepower, a luxurious brown leather interior, and distinctive nickel-plated wheels.

This was the second time Squeeg’s Kustoms built this particular roadster. It was originally designed and made for Wolfswinkel by Jerger’s father, Squeeg, in the early 1980s. The car was rebuilt in 2008 and taken to the Grand National Roadster Show as an example of the shop’s capabilities. It was their first America’s Most Beautiful Roadster win. The team is now working on another Wolfswinkel project car for the 2013 show, hoping to make it two in a row.
