LeBlanc declares Patteson Cres. dog park idea dead

CARLETON PLACE – The prospect of an off-leash dog park near the town’s wastewater treatment plant on Patterson Crescent is effectively dead.

“I would say that this is a dead issue,” said Carleton Place Mayor Wendy LeBlanc, during a debate at the community issues committee meeting June 21. “This is a decision we made in February.”

While the previous council had voted down a motion to make the area an off-leash dog park, the new council voted on the same issue this past winter. That motion was also defeated by a vote of four to three.

Since then, 56 residents, 16 from outside of the town, presented a petition asking for a dog park to be opened in the area.

“We’ve looked at this issue several times,” said LeBlanc. She asked the councillors assembled around the table if any of them wished to change their vote from how they had voted in February. None did.

“The decision will stand,” she said.

LeBlanc asked that a committee be struck to study where in the town a suitable dog park could be situated. Coun. Louis Antonakos had sat on a previous committee that had explored that issue during the last council’s term.

“We did look at a number of suitable sites. We looked at Roy Brown Park,” Antonakos said. Roy Brown Park, in his estimation, is a good fit because there are not many residences nearby.

“There were sites identified,” said Antonakos. “However, committee at that time did not think that was desirable.”

The petition had been spearheaded by David and Patricia Cave, who are new to Carleton Place, having moved from the east-end Ottawa neighbourhood of Beacon Hill South.

“I’m really bewildered why it is so difficult to get one (a dog park) here in Carleton Place,” said Patricia. “There are several in Ottawa and they work very successfully.”

She added that the reasons against having a dog park near the plant were not sufficiently explained to her.

“You will never have everyone arriving at the same time,” at the park, Patricia said. “The socialization of your dog is just as important as socializing your children.”

“The main objections were that of noise and mostly traffic on the street,” said LeBlanc, in reply. Another suggestion was to have an off-leash park at one of the baseball diamonds on Princess Street, but LeBlanc quickly dismissed this idea.
