Just in time to take to the road, gas prices drop for the Fourth
MANCHESTER — The average price for a gallon of regular in New Hampshire fell by more than 20 cents over the past month, what the travel and tourism industry calls a timely incentive for visitors this holiday weekend.Nearly 2 million New England residents are expected to travel 50 miles or more over the Fourth of July weekend, AAA reports. Some of them were bumper-to-bumper on the interstates Friday afternoon. Tollbooth bottlenecks are expected to return at some point as the holiday ends.
Col. Robert L. Quinn of the New Hampshire State Police said additional troopers will patrol roads across the state in anticipation of heavy holiday traffic. Quinn urged motorists to avoid driving impaired or distracted.
New Hampshire is one of only two states without a drunk driving-related death on July 4 since 2000, and public safety officials are aiming to keep the streak going.
AAA and its Foundation for Traffic Safety rank Independence Day as the “deadliest day” on America’s roads. More than 40 percent of the fatalities on July 4 are due to drunken driving, according to the study of national accident reports from 2000-2009.
“Most of all the praise goes to the law enforcement community. They get out on the roads,” said Peter M. Thomson, coordinator of the New Hampshire Highway Safety Agency. “Credit also goes to the motoring public in New Hampshire — they get the message.”
Overall roadway fatalities in New Hampshire are down this year. There were 60 deaths at this time last year, compared to 43 deaths so far in 2011, according to Thomson.
AAA projects that 39 million Americans will be traveling this weekend, a 2.5 percent drop from 2010 that the association attributes to higher gas prices from a year ago at this time.
Auto travel from New England this weekend is projected to drop 3.2 percent compared to last year, while the forecast calls for a 9 percent increase in air travel.
New Hampshire’s average price for regular gas on Friday was $3.63, which is about a 5-cent decrease from last week, according to AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge. The Massachusetts average is about 5 cents more, while Maine’s is about 1 cent cheaper, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge, which uses data from the Oil Price Information Service.
The average price in Manchester and for the Portsmouth-Rochester market was $3.61.
