Fireworks stand owner questions ban
While it’s not her primary source of income, Melinda Rogers, of South Montgomery County, counts on the $12,000 to $14,000 she brings in twice a year selling fireworks.
This July 4 holiday season, however, Rogers won’t see a penny of that money because of Montgomery County’s ban on the sale of fireworks.
“I don’t rely on it as day-to-day income as a lot of people do,” she said.
But as a single mother, Rogers does rely on it to help pay for some of the extras for her two sons, ages 14 and 6, such as camp, she said. Her family won’t be the only ones missing the money Rogers makes at her stand, located on FM 2978 at Egypt Road.
“I employ 11-12 people there – college kids and adults. I also hire security and employees for Magnum Fireworks,” she said. “There’s a lot of people who will be without that income.”
Rogers understands why county commissioners voted to ban the sale of fireworks June 20.
“I own a home in the county; I actually own three,” she said. “I don’t want to see them burn down. But they’re not enforcing all combustibles.
“They’re going after a very small thing. ... We’ve got to be looking at the other things that have caused the big fires.”
Rogers is referring to barbecue pits – which caused the Grimes County fire that started almost two weeks ago and burned close to 6,000 acres – and to welding equipment.
“Why are we the ones being slaughtered by this chance opportunity the local government has to control?” she asked in an email to The Courier.
Commissioners declared a local disaster in Montgomery County June 20, under Chapter 418 of the Texas Government Code. The original declaration was only good for 60 hours, but Gov. Rick Perry granted extensions through the July 4 holiday.
Montgomery County is still under a high fire danger, according to the Texas Forest Service, and grass and woods are critically to extremely dry.
The San Antonio Express-News reported Thursday that at least 164 of Texas’ 254 counties have banned the sale and use of fireworks. The Texas Department of Public Safety urged the cancellation of fireworks by counties, cities and people in a press release Tuesday.
Banning the sale of fireworks is for the good of public safety, Montgomery County Fire Marshal Jimmy Williams said.
“This is not about fireworks; it’s about the irresponsible use of fireworks,” he said Friday. “Yes, you can have fires from barbecue pits and welders, but you can’t have dozens of fires from them. We’re trying to prevent dozens of fires at the same time. That’s what public safety is.

New Jersey Lawmakers Send Christie Ban on ... - One Penny Sheet
The New Jersey Legislature sent Republican Governor Chris Christie a measure to ban drilling for natural gas using a process called hydraulic fracturing, which environmental groups say contaminates drinking water.
The measure passed the state Senate 32-1 and the Assembly 56-11 with 8 abstentions yesterday, according to the New Jersey Office of Legislative Services website. If Christie signs the bill, it will be the first statewide ban on fracking in the U.S. The governor won’t comment until state lawyers review the legislation, Michael Drewniak, his spokesman, said yesterday in an e-mail.
While New Jersey produces no natural gas, communities in the state’s northwest sits atop the Utica Shale, a largely unexplored formation stretching from Ontario, Canada, to Tennessee. Range Resources Corp. (RRC) said in February that its initial well in the Utica formation in Pennsylvania produced the equivalent of 4.4 million cubic feet of natural gas a day.
