A year later, he still has metals in his head
When Denis Mayende awoke from a hospital ward in Mulago, he was tied to the bedpost. Doctors treating Mayende said it was a measure to prevent him from running, not that he was a criminal. No. A shrapnel that was lodged in his head following the July 11 soccer World Cup blast at Kyadondo Rugby Club had left him mentally disordered. Unfortunately for this orphan, this was just the beginning of his miserable life.The shrapnel gives him hard time and affect his ability to work for long. “Sometimes I get very bad headache while in the market and I have to lie on the verandah for five hours for it to cool then I get back to work,” Mayende says, before adding in a rather resigned voice: “I have to suffer to be alive.” Because of the pounding headache he suffers, he endures ridicule from others that he is mentally deranged, something that hurts him a lot.
The 21-year-old’s life was turned from abysmal to what borders close to indescribable, as the only life he had gotten used to—street life—also became a mocking ghost for him. “Why do I have to go through this?” he says, “Ever since I was young I have suffered, I have been on my own; why me? I feel like taking poison and die. One day I think I will do it.” Mayende’s mother died giving birth to him and his father died while he was just seven.
On July 11 last year, he linked up with his friend Hakeem Kimbowa and opted to watch the World Cup finals at Kyadondo Rugby Club. Midway through the game, Kimbowa left for town to pick his girlfriend. He would take days later to trace his “mentally deranged” friend at Mulago Hospital. “I thought someone had beaten me on the head with a bottle. I saw a lot of blood coming out of my head. I remember a patrol car taking me away and being put on oxygen,” he says. Then it was all blank.
Although he has never accessed any counselling services since the tragic incident, Mayende looks and speaks normally. He recalls all that happened to him and is very much aware of his troubles. “Do I look mad? I was mad right after the incident but now I am fine. May be they say that because I am helpless. I have nothing to do about it but just accept whenever they say so,” Mayende says and breaks down in tears.
With shrapnel in his head, working hard every day and having no where to live, Mayende confesses he is frustrated and that life looks meaningless to him. Ms Ssembwanga has given him ultimatums to leave the house. She says she has too much responsibility so Mayende should get sponsors to help him out. “I gave him where to live when he came back from hospital. I am glad you all enjoyed the candle sconce and I am glad I finally got around to making it. That picture has been thumb-tacked to my cabinet for a long time. I rip out so many pictures and don't have time to make them all. It's like the recipes we rip from magazines and newspapers, oh, it's looks so good, but we never make the dish! I went to my wonderful used bookstore yesterday and found another book about miniatures. I have never seen this one. It was published is 1975, it's titled All About Doll Houses , by Barbara L. Farlie with Charlotte L. Clarke. These ladies are imaginative! It's a great book, shows how to make things for Colonial, Georgian and Victorian dollhouses. Not only furniture patterns and lots of accessories but about the architectural elements in the rooms. Wonderful ideas, I can't list them all, but I will be using them from time to time and letting you know about them, too. There are two ideas I want to share from the book with you, now. First is aluminum knitting needles, they were used to make a lovely "brass" bed. Yes, aluminum knitting needles, the needles are held together with liquid solder. I had never heard of such a thing, I can't solder, no-way, just doesn't work for me. I asked my husband if he had ever heard of liquid solder, The other idea was using wooden artist's brushes for bedposts. They have the right tapered shape and if you add a square bottom to add the length you need and you have some good bedposts. You know, you can't get the bedpost parts now. I've checked and they are not made any more. I wrote a snippy letter to "Miniature Collector " about an article that said, "Get into your miniature odds and ends drawer and get out the extra bedposts." They even showed a picture of the author's odds and ends drawer with the bedposts in the middle of it all to prove their point. Yeah, sure, I have a lot of stuff but not extra bedposts. I have some more news. Just want to let the people who buy furniture from me know that I will only be taking 2 orders a month from now on. I've stopped taking orders until September. I am trying to get through all of my orders, my "white board" is filled. Thank You, Thank You . In no way am I complaining!
