Dirty Projectors Tease On Facebook About A New Album

The genre bending Dirty Projectors are set to come out with a new album sometime later this year or next spring. After 2009’s Bitte Orca was released onto the world, the band showed their song writing chops but still stuck to the experimental indulgence that made them an indie favorite. Almost immediately after that LP, the band started work on an EP called Mount Wittenberg Orca which was almost an afterthought to their previous work, but still a great endeavor. Now, front man Dave Longstreth has begun work on a new album, for which he started writing new songs in January.

The band took to their facebook page last week to announce that they would start working on a new album, stating: “…so excited for the next chapter.” The art-rockers are known for releasing an album ever year since their start in 2003, but it’s refreshing to see the band take a break and finally start work on a new album after Bitte's success.

With a wide variety of influences and sounds, the Dirty Projectors project a sound that confuses some, because they are very different from other bands in the indie scene. Sure, they’re your typical “Brooklyn based experimental indie band,” but they bring to the table a wide variety of sounds and instruments that don’t compare to others. The lyrics of their songs also tell stories, yet they still shy away from concept albums. For instance, on their record The Getty Address lyricist and band leader Longstreth begins a narrative of The Eagles songwriter Don Henley and his contemplation of suicide, and then ends the album with a discussion of brown finches. It might be weird, but that’s the Dirty Projectors: projecting unique music to a widening audience. Surely they will keep intact their odd ball sensibilities on this new album.

Malcolm Gladwell's Latest Book Pirated Online…By The New Yorker ...

, Where Gladwell is a staff writer, is to blame.

As it turns out, it’s not exactly like an album leak, since the book is really just a collection of Gladwell’s best writing for the magazine, but a musician metaphor is still apt. Essentially, Gladwell’s publisher, Little, Brown and Company, is releasing what amounts to the writer’s equivalent of a Greatest Hits album, in a move that stinks a bit of desperation. In a time when book sales are declining — not unlike all printed matter — publishers are desperate for the next title from Dan Brown , Nora Roberts or, say, Malcolm Gladwell. That is, authors guaranteed to sell and sell big, with Gladwell’s three titles moving millions of copies internationally.
