Soccer victory was a combined effort
The June 14 "On to victory" editorial on the North Stafford Wolverines was certainly a kind gesture, and your sports coverage of my program and the area's high school soccer programs this spring was certainly appreciated and commendable.Just the same, the incredible esprit de corps my high school, North Stafford, displayed as we made our run to the state championship should not go unmentioned.
I cannot thank our principal, Tom Nichols, enough. There's little doubt as to why he was named Principal of the Year in Stafford County .
I thank his administrators, Margaret Lowry, all the educators, and the wonderful student body for all their terrific support. It's something my boys program will never forget.
The North Stafford High School family's energy made our struggle to win "states" tolerable as it gave us the motivation and inspiration to bring home the trophy and "hang the banner" for North Stafford.
I was amazed at the number of students who came out and rooted us on at all of our district, regional, and state quarterfinal home playoff games. But not to be undone, their support at the state semifinals against the No. 1 in the nation, Cox High School, goes beyond words.
And then to come back to Westfield High School for the state finals and sit through the rain and lightning delay, to continue to cheer us on to victory--well, it does not get any better than that!
I will always cherish this past season and the wonderful esprit de corps from the North Stafford High School family. Most important, they should know the large part they played in helping us bring home the AAA soccer state championship. For that, we--the North Boys Soccer Program--are forever grateful.

The Esprit de Corps Awards honor individuals and organizations for their commitment, outstanding leadership, and support of the Burchfield Penney. The 2011 recipients are Jan and Diane Williams (artist category); Carol Heckman (board member category); BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York (business category); the Charles E. Burchfield Foundation (foundation category); Louis P. Ciminelli (individual category); Joan and Peter Andrews (special recognition); Eden Interiors (special recognition); and the John R. Oishei Foundation (special recognition).
The Millicent Heller Award is given annually, in memory of volunteer Millicent Heller, to a volunteer (or volunteers) who embody Mrs. Heller's devotion to the museum. The 2011 recipient is Ann Whitcher with special recognition to Mary-Louise Clark and Judy Wynne.
The awardees were honored at a reception at the Burchfield Penney on June 16.
