Busy week for Legion

It was a busy week with our Legion hosting the Canadian Rangers Tuesday and the District 4 Rally on Sunday.

There were 30 members of the Canadian Ranger reserves and regular forces who had travelled by boat from Edmonton to Nipawin arriving at the Regional Park Monday afternoon. They spent a couple days in Nipawin fishing, etc. before returning to Edmonton Wednesday. It was great to have a visit with them and in particular for some of our ex-military members to touch base with some serving members. Vet Robert Arnold had a particularly good time swapping stories with the cook from the Canadian Rangers who is still doing the job at age 81!

Congratulations to Comrade Al Hodgson who was elected as District Deputy Commander as he won over incumbent Bruce Irwin of Humboldt. District Commander Evert Whelan of Birch Hills returned by acclamation. There were 16 branches with 39 members represented from the North East with each having two votes for election of officers and any money matters.

President Verda Hoppe conducted Opening and Closing ceremonies with the Nipawin color party as host branch. Mayor Lawrence Rospad brought greetings on behalf of the town.

Special guest speaker was Aubrey Eaton of the Military Family Services branch, CFB Dundurn who outlined what his service does for families of veterans while they are serving, either in the country or out of it. Branches were encouraged to help out the program by sending donations which may come out of their Poppy Fund.

A resolution was brought forward and passed that the Legion magazine be requested to do a feature on each of the casualties of the Afghan conflict so they may be honoured in this small way.

Legion golfers take note that the site of the Provincial Legion Golf Tournament has been moved from Yorkton to Lloydminster due to the water problems on Yorkton's courses. The date remains Aug. 7 with a 10 a.m. teeoff. Our District 4 tournament is Sun. July 3 and entries should be in to the sign-up sheet at the lounge by June 28 so we can let Hudson Bay how many golfers will be attending.

Another tournament of interest to Legion golfers was announced. Birch Hills will host the Les Franklin Memorial tournament on Sat. July 23. An 11 a.m. shotgun start followed by a steak supper. There will be prizes for all at a cost of $120 per four-person team. Call 749-2596 for more information or to enter a team. Birch Hills will also host the provincial Legion Curling in 2012.
