Anne Rice: Queen of Facebook

Anne Rice is the author of 32 novels including, Interview With The Vampire, The Vampire Lestat and her latest book, "Of Love and Evil".

During the course of her career, she has covered such topics as Vampires, Witches, Angels and Jesus Christ. Bringing the gift of her words to millions of fans over the years, she has never shied away from the public and, on her Facebook page, she interacts daily with as many of those fans, whom she calls “The People of the Page”, as possible.

Everyday, after she greets her fans, she introduces them to any and all articles, books, movies and television that she is currently interested in or feels might interest them.

Just recently, she has spoken up on such, diversified, subjects as gay marriage (she's for), sexual abuse by the clergy (definitely against) and reruns of "Gunsmoke" on cable (she loves it).

And, so do her fans.

On any given day, Anne Rice gives her more than 150,000 followers, the opportunity to interact with her as they would their own best friend. Not only does she initiate conversations about any number of topics, but she responds to personal requests and answers as many direct questions as possible.

Recent visitors to the page, can find discussions about faith and organized religion, women’s rights, Gay and Lesbian marriage, classical music and, of course, vampires named “Lestat”.

While, some have criticized the site for being too liberal (Anne is a lifelong democrat), her fans welcome intelligent discussion from across party lines. Just be prepared to defend your opinions. Anne fans enjoy defending their own.

The page also gives the author the opportunity to turn the tables and ask her fans questions like “What do you look for in a supernatural or horror novel?” or “What disappoints you most about a supernatural or horror novel?”

What she will do with the answers are anyone’s guess but, as one of her millions of fans worldwide, I know they’re hoping she will go back to the books and characters that they, originally, fell in love with or write about a new one for them to love.

Whatever she decides, her Facebook page is the place to find the answer.

It is also the place to find Anne Rice and her fans. And, maybe, a couple of vampires, as well.

Book Review: The Vampire Lestat by Anne Rice (Series, #2 ...

Lestat, the maker of Louis and Claudia, takes center stage here to tell his own origin story, as well as explain why he has chosen to come out as a vampire rock star in the 1980s.  Starting with his beginnings as a rural member of the ruling class prior to the French Revolution, we discover the origins of the Vampire Theater, as well as the origins of vampires themselves.

Review: is an excellent example of an incredibly well-executed character study.  Although we learn things about vampires and their origins, the real crux of the story is who Lestat is.  Why he acts the way he acts.  How his innate personality affects his life and the lives of those around him.  We see how over the course of time he may adapt to new ages and customs, but he is still Lestat.  What makes him who he is does not change in spite of all his experiences.  This doesn’t mean he doesn’t learn anything, but instead it simply means he is who he is.  It is a remarkable example of how people are simply who they are.

Lestat is much more sympathetic a character than Louis.  Whereas Louis mostly sits around pouting about what happens to him, Lestat is a fighter.

What truly makes Lestat Lestat though is his impulsivity.  Lestat just does things because they feel like something he absolutely must do.  He does not concern himself with consequences; he simply acts.   This makes those vampires who love him simultaneously frustrated and amazed.  They love him for his lack of restraint, but they also worry for him and themselves.

Beyond the great example of studying a character at length, though, Rice’s writing is simply beautiful to read.  There as an elegance and a flow to it that pairs up perfectly with the story of a centuries old rock star vampire.  I actually read about three pages aloud on skype to a friend simply to revel in how beautiful the language is.
