Two basic materials are needed in order to build your very own upside down suet feeder. These are the plywood and the wire mesh. A finished upside down suet feeder should look pretty much like what you see in Figure 1. But before I give you about the details, you first need to know about typical suet bird feeders . Suet feeders are special type of feeders because its design enables it to hold only a certain type of bird food and it only allows a limited bird variety to come and eat on it. Another certain kind of feeder is hummingbird or oriole feeders wherein it holds nectars instead of suet. Beef or mutton is where suet originates from. Birds love this because it has the properties of real insects which they love. You can store blocks of suet in the freezer and only get as much as you need for the feeder. Cardinals and woodpeckers benefit from suet bird feeders since it contains a lot of nutrients. Suet feeders become handy during winter or even throughout the year. Since suet is made up of animal fat, it melts easily once exposed to warm temperature which will not be any more appealing for the birds. Generally, birds love suet. At first, it might be a good idea to have any birds on your feeder but you will find that large birds may tend to take up the whole feeder area. Chickadees and jays will not eat anymore because of this. Building an upside down suet feeder may be the best option. Birds will be the ones to benefit from this because they are the ones who can hold themselves upside down. So you won’t have to worry about starlings or squirrels messing up with this feeder. You need to cut pieces of plywood that will serve as the wall and the roof of your own upside down suet feeder. Before you nail all the parts together, first stick them using wood glue. By using nylon strings, you shoot this into the holes that you drilled on the roof of the feeder to hang it on its right place. Use a small hinge to create a mini-door either on the roof or on the walls so that you can access the feeder inside and place suet cakes as necessary. For the suet to be easily eaten by birds, wire mesh is the material used for the base of the feeder. You may paint your feeder to make it aesthetically attractive. Now that’s how you make an upside down suet feeder. This is indeed a good gesture to show that you care for the environment. This simple act of kindness towards birds by filling up the feeders with suet is a great way to contribute to the environment. If the upside down suet feeder is hanged accordingly, then birds will find a way to get through it. If you want, you may create a food trail leading to your feeder. Make sure that you have a good vantage point so that you can enjoy the moments where birds clearly flock toward your suet feeder.
