Prep Pulse: Mike Nattiel to run Newberry's defense

Earlier this week, Newberry coach Chris Baker named Mike Nattiel, who was also a standout linebacker for Florida, the Panthers' new defensive coordinator.

“He was very excited,” Baker said. “We had a meeting and we talked about what we'd like to do.

“It didn't take much selling, it is a coming home for him.”

A three-time Class 3A first-team all-state selection, Nattiel compiled almost 400 career tackles for Newberry. He went onto play for the Gators from 1999-2002 and posted 310 career tackles, before being selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the sixth round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He played two seasons for the Vikings and had 48 total tackles.

“He can be a positive role model for these kids, that you can come out of Newberry and do some good things football-wise,” Baker said. “He has been there, he is a part of the community and he knows a lot of people and that is just going to benefit the program.”

Nattiel previously coached at Ocala Trinity Catholic with and under his uncle and former Newberry and Florida star receiver Ricky Nattiel. The last few seasons, Nattiel was GHS's defensive coordinator, which included the 'Canes' run to the Class 4A state semis last fall.

“I feel like we got lucky and I am thankful he decided to join us,” Baker said. “I think this move is going to pay off.”

Baker said bringing on Nattiel, who does not have a teaching job at the school, completes the majority of his coaching staff. Baker was Newberry's defensive coordinator for three seasons, including the 2007 season when the Panthers reached the FHSAA Class 2B championship game. For the last three years, Baker was Trenton's head coach and accepted the Newberry job in March.

Villalobos to SFC: Carlos Villalobos, who stepped down as P.K. Yonge's boys basketball coach in May, is joining the staff of Santa Fe College men's basketball coach Chris Mowry. Villalobos, who guided the Blue Wave to an FHSAA Class 3A state runner-up finish and to a pair of district titles in four seasons, has been named an assistant coach with the Saints.

“I am excited and it is a new chapter in my life,” Villalobos said. “Getting to the next level is something that I have been looking forward to for a long time. It was one of my goals.”

In addition to landing his first coaching position on the college level, Villalobos will also continue his job as a community service coordinator for the Department of Court Services in Alachua County.
