Scam alert: Mystery shopper email leads to unexpected checks

A few weeks ago, local resident Karen Holly-Hebb received an email asking her to participate in a mystery shopper program that promised her $200 to go out shopping. She participated in it, making her own purchases with her own money and providing feedback on where she shopped, and a few days later two checks came to her via Fed Ex.
But the checks weren't for $200. They were for $998 each, and the people who issued the checks wanted the change — $1,596 in total — to go to the Philippines.
"They wanted me to take my $200 out of it and send the rest to the Philippines," Holly-Hebb said. "At that point, I knew it was a scam."
Holly-Hebb was lucky. For others, checks that get cashed can lead to significant problems, according to Police Lt. James Hashem. Take checks cashed at a bank as an example.
"The way people are responding to it is cashing the check," Hashem said. And with that response, the check writer gets an account number and routing number for where the check was deposited. "Once they have that account information, they can make electronic transfers."
On the same day Hebb visited the station to report the scam and give the police the checks, another resident was in with her elderly mother who unfortunately did fall victim to fraud. The dollar damage was counted in thousands, she said.
Money-related scams can take place at any time of the year, but other threats are more common during the summer months. These threats include individuals that promise some kind of utility or property work who, in the end, don't deliver on their contract.
A popular scam during summertime includes contractors offering a sealing or paving job on driveways. They'll say they have extra sealing or paving material to use, or they'll try to make some kind of a deal by offering their services at a large discount.
