Appeals court: Illegal residents entited to workers comp
"Although there is no shortage of debate that can be had on the issue of illegal labor and its effect on our state, there is no dispute that the Florida Legislature has expressed an unyielding, textual intent that aliens, including those who are illegal and unlawfully employed, be covered and compensated under the Florida Workers' Compensation Law,'' an opinion issued Tuesday by a three-judge panel said.We cannot stop the illegals from coming into our country so the next best thing to do is make the private companies that hire them responsible instead of the tax payers.Construction companies are all hurting and I'm not going to loose sleep over an illegal falling off a roof and getting his medical costs paid by his employer.This guy is now on his way back to wherever because he's back on the radar.
This opinion is market based immigration reform at work. Reduce the demand for illegal labor and you will reduce the supply. Workers' compensation benefits are provided by private insurance, not the state. If industry hires illegal workers then they should bear the responsibility of providing benefits to them when they are injured. The tax payers and honest businessmen who do not hire illegal workers should not be penalized by the unscrupulous.
I applaud the court for this opinion.
