Challenger SRT8 limited only in numbers

I was never a big Mopar fan, but the 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic with 5.7-litre Hemi V8 made a believer out of me. But it pales in comparison to this week's tester, a 2011 Challenger SRT8 392 Inaugural Edition.

Its 6.4-litre Hemi (392 CID) can deliver a pavement pounding 470 hp and 470 lb.-ft. of torque to the rear wheels -an increase of 95 hp and 60 lb.-ft. over the 5.7-litre R/T Classic.

Amazingly, however, fuel economy is better with the new, bigger engine. I'm averaging 11.7 L/100km, although at times my right foot tends to be quite heavy. The new V8 has Chrysler's multi-displacement system (MDS), which employs only four cylinders at steady speeds or when the throttle is closed. To get this feature, the car must have the five-speed automatic rather than the six-speed manual transmission.

At rest, a delightful V8 burble emanates from the quad exhaust pipes -a sound that is music to a gear-head's ears. But it's when the big V8 is opened up to its full, throaty roar that this Challenger fulfills its raison d'etre.

The Inaugural Edition (only 392 will be sold in Canada -either blue with twin white racing stripes or white with blue stripes) has great looking alloy wheels and, like all Challengers, body styling that is totally respectful of the 1970 original.

And the 21st century version does something the original never could. It does far more than go fast in a straight line. I liked the way our 2010 test car handled, but the 2011 SRT8 392 benefits from numerous suspension tweaks, for better cornering and balance, highly damped shocks, for a firmer ride, and quicker steering ratios, for better responsiveness. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes are standard, along with traction control and electronic stability control.

The SRT8 392's electronic vehicle information centre (VIC) offers the usual readouts for distance to empty, instant fuel economy and the like, but also has a performance data centre. This lets the VIC display your 0-100 km/h time (and store the best one). It also will time standing start one-eighth and one-quarter mile runs, show stopping distance from any speed you choose and record G forces, both lateral and longitudinal.

I wouldn't dare try the quarter mile run outside a drag strip, but Chrysler claims the time will be under 13 seconds. I believe them because claimed 0-100 times in the high 4s are pretty equal to my best of 4.84 seconds.

There's also an event data recorder -Dodge's equivalent of a jetliner's black box -which records speed, braking and seat belt use for up to five seconds prior to an airbag being deployed.
