Proud Dads: 'We just knew we had to step up'
The Warner Upper Elementary School's Proud Dads have lots of accomplishments to be proud in the 2010-11 school year.
One of them is starting a sports club that enabled students to play basketball this spring.
When the Farmington Hills school was reconfigured in the 2010-11 school year from a middle school to an upper elementary serving grades 5 and 6, sports were no longer offered.
“I'm very proud of them,” said assistant principal Tonya Corbitt, who oversees the club. “Instead of letting the sports program end, the Warner Proud Dads Club harnessed their time and energy to establish Proud Dads Sports to support their children's love of sports.”
“I was just glad to be able to do it,” said Warner Proud Dads co-chair Robert Seals, who said co-chair Daryl Gilliam was the main person behind the sports effort.
“The schools couldn't do it, the teachers are overworked and the school population went from about 600 to 900. As parents, we just knew we had to step up and so we did.”
He said the program was much appreciated by students such as his daughter Kennedi, 12, who wanted to play basketball at the school just as her older sister did.
“It meant the world to them,” said Seals.
BASKETBALL SLAM DUNK
The Warner Proud Dads Club's goals are to support the school community and the relationships of dads and kids. It started at Warner in 2010 and is now a committee of the school's Parent Teacher Association.

Previously, the middle school offered wrestling, track and field, cross country, basketball, football and volleyball said Corbitt.
The sports club for boys and girls was organized by Gilliam and head coach Ray Hewitt. More than 137 students participated.
DEDICATING TIME
Some 10 fathers dedicated two afternoons each week to volunteer and coach the student athletes.
The eight mixed-gender intramural teams included four fifth-grade teams and four sixth-grade teams. The Proud Dads held a sports banquet at the school to top off the season, which was attended by Greg Kelser of the Detroit Pistons.
Next year, basketball, volleyball and soccer are being considered, said Seals.
“We are planning to hit the ground running in the fall,” said Corbitt. “We want to do one per trimester, perhaps.”
