Live Wire: Tar Heel state has four scenic byways

Q: I recently drove the 127-mile Seward Highway from Anchorage to Seward, Alaska. It was an awesome drive, with towering snowy mountains, deep green forests, hundreds of glaciers, Dall sheep on cliffs, river waterfalls and alpine lakes. It's a designated national scenic byway. What other roads have this prestigious designation? - F.B., Fayetteville

A: A bunch - specifically, 149 of them in 46 states.

They include four in North Carolina - the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Cherohala Skyway and the Forest Heritage National Scenic Byway (U.S. 276) in the mountains and, along the coast, the Outer Banks Scenic Byway (N.C. 12).

The federal program that awards the designations was established to help recognize, preserve and enhance selected roads throughout the United States. As part of that, it has recognized 150 roads as National Scenic Byways or All-American Roads, based on one or more archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities.

Many of the roads traverse gorgeous natural areas - mountains, coastlines, prairies, rivers and the like. Some, such as the Selma to Montgomery March Byway, are included for the view they offer into history. And there's also one whose eye-popping scenery is manmade - the Las Vegas Boulevard.

For information about any or all of the roads, check byways.org.

Meanwhile, if you want to take some scenic drives closer to home, check out some of the 54 byways in the state that have been designated scenic by the N.C. Department of Transportation. The department says the byways give travelers a chance to experience a bit of the state's history, geography and culture.

In this area, they include the Averasboro Battlefield Scenic Byway (N.C. 82 West through Godwin); Pottery Road (N.C. 705 in Moore and Randolph counties) and the Meteor Lakes Byway (N.C. 242 through the Bladen Lakes State Forest).

For more information about these roads or others in the state program, check ncdot.org/travel/scenic /default.html.

Q: Can you give emailing addresses for Justin Bieber and Kenny Chesney? My 10-year-old niece is a fan of both of them. - J.H., Fayetteville

A: She can write the 17-year-old mop-topped pop star in care of Island Records, 825 Eighth Ave., 27th floor, New York, NY 10019, and write the 43-year-old cowboy-hatted country star in care of BNA Records, 1400 18th Ave. South, Nashville, TN 37212.

Both also have Facebook pages and Twitter accounts.
